Stability & Buoyancy Tests

 BUOYANCY

Wooden boats built in the traditional manner have great reserves of buoyancy even when flooded This is inherent in the method of construction and in the materials used. In addition to this we fit all our sailboats with additional buoyancy blocks made from a closed cell plastic foam covered with sailcloth. This additional buoyancy allows a crew member to board a completely flooded boat to assist in bailing it out. Each boat is supplied with an instruction leaflet which outlines the recommended procedure in the case of a full capsize.

 STABILITY

Our dinghies have hull forms that give a fair degree of natural stability and this is augmented by the use of steel centerplates. However the most important factor in the stability of a small sailing dinghy is the ability of the crew to shift their weight to balance the boat as the pressure upon the sails increases or decreases. The amount that this is necessary depends upon the sail plan selected and all our smaller dinghies are offered with a choice of rigs to suit the agility of the customer and his desire for either peace or performance.

RECREATIONAL CRAFT DIRECTIVE (RCD)

This is a piece of legislation presently in force in the European Community. It covers production craft of all types specifying construction methods and design parameters. Fortunately it does not cover boats built in traditional materials and to traditional designs individually by craftsman boat builders so that we are still able to offer our boats to our customers without the crippling costs. Where we supply boats to countries outside the scope of this legislation it is on the understanding that the customer will take what steps are necessary to comply with local regulations and the need to register the boat with the authorities. We will be pleased to furnish any information that such an authority may require.

RCD Paragraph 3 clause e)

The exclusion in (e) is intended to exclude from the scope of the Directive craft and/or types or classes of craft which were designed or developed before 1950 and which are individually constructed predominantly but not exclusively using the original materials. Builders of historical craft are able to build the same authentic bygone design, one boat after another. These boats are still unique and individual, when built using methods and materials consistent with the original design, and retain their aesthetic charm and characteristics. In this respect predominantly means using the original material for both the hull and the deck, but allowing contemporary use of materials e.g. plywood instead of solid timber, laminated frames, modern adhesives, paints, sealants and fastenings. Series production by means of moulds shall not be possible (e.g.GRP production).
